Interview With a Tarot Master: Rowan

Describe how you first found out about your psychic abilities.

I always perceived things differently and with different meaning than most people around me, but I didn’t think anything of it until I was in grade school, when it was a surprise that most people didn’t perceive all of the noise and patterns that I did. I learned to avoid mentioning it and tried to make sense of it on my own. I was a strange, quiet little kid, people tell me.

What have you done to develop your abilities?

I am almost completely self-taught. My mother is a secular person, but she would occasionally come to me to discuss meaningful dreams she had. inquisitive observation, notes and library research taught me a lot about interpretation. She was not outwardly spiritual, so there were no tarot cards or books on divination in our house, so eventually I bought my own, studied hard, and performed readings for my friends at parties and sleepovers. I knew I was good at tarot from their feedback, especially when friends I barely knew would stop me in the halls months later and tell me how things went after their reading. I was so excited because it seemed that, through tarot, I could focus on specific patterns and symbols and get exactly what the Fates were trying to tell me without being overwhelmed.

Describe your skills.

During a dream interpretation, I have to ask a lot of questions that may seem personal or unrelated to your question on hand, but it’s important. Man has a lot of symbols that are similar, even between distant cultures, and their symbolism in one’s subconscious does tend to follow some specific patterns. I’ll ask you to describe your dream to the fullest extent, including emotional undertones and background activity, and ask if there have been certain events or personalities in your life. A dream does not need to be a carbon copy every time to be considered a “recurring” dream; most of the time only a few specific elements repeat themselves and carry meaning.

During a tarot reading, I will ask you your question(s) and determine the best spread to use to find the best answer. I may ask you to pick a “signifier” card (I find it easier to say than “significator”, although that term is more traditional) to represent yourself in the spread on my table. I will read each card as I lay it down and give you the meanings as they relate to the placement in the spread, to each other, and to the question at hand. After all of the cards are in place, I look at the spread as a whole to find the greater meaning.

Can you communicate with spirits who have passed on?

I have only had one experience with someone who had “passed on”… Many years ago, my closest friend and I were able to contact her dead grandfather, and he grew upset after she yelled at him and accused him of something. I didn’t know she was going to do that! The atmosphere got tense, so I tried to calm them down and close the portal, but it took longer than expected to get both of them to settle, and I had to monitor that room for weeks afterward to make sure there were no lingering spirits. It was exhausting, and I don’t think I will be attempting any more communications with spirits any time soon.

Are you able to turn your psychic abilities ‘on’ or ‘off’ when you want to?

There is a small ritual of clearing my mind and creating a distraction-free atmosphere before sitting down to do a reading (I do this every morning before logging on to the network). This allows me to more easily relax and recognize symbolism and patterns during work, but I do believe a highly developed skill is “on”, to some degree, all the time. This explains dreams and other “interruptions” while awake that give me important messages. The skills that I have sharpened are the ability to become more selectively sensitive to the messages and patterns that I perceive and being able to put them into words. Sometimes, when these patterns and interruptions become to annoying, I do have to distract myself with constant noise or activity (like housework) to drown them out, and that works most of the time.

What is life like living with these abilities?

When I was very young and exploring my abilities without a community or mentor, even before picking up a tarot pack, I would sometimes become overwhelmed by messages from dreams and patterns in life. I think the first lesson I had to learn before I could sharpen my abilities was the ability to control them and keep them from invading my personal life. I did not sleep consistently as a child. Now, I can almost always sleep through a disturbing but meaningful dream, although it never gets less annoying. I keep a diary and track symbolism for myself, and I still get meaningful messages.

Do you think anyone can develop psychic skills?

I think there is an element of the unexplained in every person, but, like most traits, the development of such a skill comes from having the best outcome for both nature (genetics, perhaps) and nurture (having divining tools, a supportive community, and lots of practice!).

What do you like best about working with PsychicNetworkers?

I really love how warm and professional everyone at the company. That, and I love being able to talk to people from far away places and all walks of life over the phone! It’s really cool. Even better if I hear relief from a client after a reading.

Do you get readings for yourself?

I read for myself very sparingly. I will sometimes go years without asking the cards anything about myself, although if there’s something I really want to know, I will do it. Self-readings were one of the first ways I could tell that my reading abilities were accurate. But I have grown to understand that, at least for myself, it’s sometimes better to keep the future unknown, unless there is an immediate dilemma. I have accidentally discovered personal events that would come to pass while asking about something unrelated and innocent. I do let my dreams send me messages when they chose to, but I’d rather to keep some mystery in my life.

Is there anything else you would like to share about your abilities?

Joining this community and practicing tarot every day has actually done wonders for me in terms of personal health. I think my head is finally “getting enough exercise” that I feel more like a complete person, and I hope to spread some of that positivity to everyone I talk to. When I was three, I remember having a ball of lightning on the end of my finger for no reason one day, and thinking nothing of it. I’d like to think it was a sign that I was destined to bring light to everyone I could reach in this life, and I’d like to live up to it. : )
